What to wear to a newborn photo session

in-home-newborn-girl-3

“What should I wear to my newborn session” this is something I get asked A LOT. My short answer is whatever you are most comfortable in, but I do have suggestions!

I understand the challenges of preparing for an in-home photo session with a baby, including the difficulty of finding time to shower, plan outfits, style your hair and makeup, and ensure your little one is also ready. I always send a “how to plan for your newborn session” once you book your newborn session, but I hope this also helps with coordinating your outfits.

The first part of planning your outfits is to stick with neutral light colors. If you decide on a bright pink or blue shirt that color will create a color cast on your newborns skin. Light bounces off colors, so wearing a light neutral colored shirt will give your images a clean bright look. As for shoes, all family members can be bare foot! This gives your images a natural in home look.

Outfit ideas for the Mamas:

A cream or white colored dress could look stunning, and maxi dresses are particularly great options. Dresses can be very flattering for the postpartum mama body. If you’re not feeling a dress, neutral sweaters are always a safe choice. However, I would still suggest considering a dress as they can look absolutely beautiful.

Amazon: High neck midi or this one: Square neck maxi

Nothing fits but: White off the shoulder maxi

Baltic Born: Floral Maxi

Outfit ideas for the Dads:

A pair of jeans with a light colored henley shirt, button down, or fitted T-shirt (since Dads seem to get hot).

Target: Henley long sleeve

Abercrombie: Slim fit T-shirt

Lululemon: Long sleeve – This is what Dad is wearing in the photos below.

Outfit ideas for the baby:

Baby just needs a onesie and maybe a knotted gown. Newborns tend to get lost in newborn outfits, so I prefer babies to be wrapped or in a knotted gown. I will bring bring different neutral/white wraps with me.

Lou Lou and Company: Knotted Gown
