How to Make Time for Wedding Portraits Without Adding Stress

One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples is: “How are we going to fit in portraits without feeling rushed or overwhelmed?” That’s exactly why I created this guide on how to make time for wedding portraits without adding stress. With the right approach and thoughtful planning, you can enjoy your day and walk away with beautiful, relaxed images.

Here’s how I help make that happen:

1. Build Buffer Into the Timeline

I always help create a custom photography timeline with my couples—and I pad it with a little extra time. Why? Because real life happens: zippers get stuck, bouquets go missing, or guests run late. A flexible timeline gives us room to breathe, so nothing feels rushed.

2. Consider a First Look

A first look is one of the best ways to create space for portraits earlier in the day. It lets us get those emotional, just-before-the-ceremony images and most of your wedding party photos done ahead of time.

It also opens up cocktail hour for couple portraits, extended family photos, or simply time to enjoy with guests.

3. Plan for Golden Hour

Golden hour is the soft, golden light that happens shortly before sunset. I like to sneak my couples away for just 10–15 minutes during the reception (usually around the first course) for a few quiet portraits when the light is at its most flattering.

It’s also a moment to catch your breath, just the two of you.

Bonus: 3 Portrait Sessions Built Into Your Day

I love to build three opportunities for couple portraits into every wedding day:

  • First Look: Calm, joyful, and full of anticipation
  • Post-Ceremony: That “just married” glow is unbeatable
  • Golden Hour: Soft, timeless portraits in perfect light

This approach is another great way to ensure you’re making time for wedding portraits without adding stress. By spreading out your portraits, we avoid cramming everything into one rushed block of time—and you get a richer, more varied gallery.

If you’re in the midst of planning and looking to finalize your photographer or videographer, I’d love to be part of your day. I take a tailored approach to every wedding—creating a seamless photography timeline that supports the natural rhythm of your celebration, while ensuring you receive timeless, artful images that reflect the beauty and emotion of your day.
