We are sharing tips and tricks on how to include older siblings in your newborn session
As a Boston newborn photographer
I always strive to capture these precious moments and connections between siblings during a session. It’s all about creating a relaxed and natural environment where everyone feels comfortable and included.
Below I have include some tops and tricks on how to include an older sibling in your newborn session.
Older sibling portraits
We like to let the older siblings know that they are just as important as their newborn baby brother and sister. If they want to show off their bedroom or show us their toys we will join them and do a mini shoot in their room.
Newborn Safety
The newborns safety is our top priority. I always ask how the older sibling is doing with their little brother/sister and I ask if they are able to hold the baby with assistance. Mom and Dad are always right next to them in case they are all done. Most of the time they just want 1 minute (or 20 seconds) with the baby. We always use a pillow to support the older siblings arm. We will also have the baby lay on the bed and the older sibling will lay next to them, giving them hugs, kissing their head or smelling their feet.
Family portraits
The older sibling always gets to choose where they would like to sit or stand, so they get to make their own decision like the big sibling they are! If they are not wanting to get in photos right away, don’t stress! We will take portraits with Mom, Dad and baby and I assure you that your big brother or sister will want to be included.
Let the older sibling help
During an in-home newborn photo session, it’s important to consider how to involve older siblings. One great way is to let them participate in caring for and interacting with the new baby. For example, an older sister can help hold the baby, make her “laugh”, and even change her diaper. It’s important to give the older siblings a job and breaks when needed and let them decide when they want to be in the photos.
